Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I know a lot of people think Valentine's Day is just for married people, or maybe two people who are dating, and honestly in one sense it is. However, I also think it's a great opportunity to share the love of God with our fellow Believers and even non-Christians! After all 1 John says that we love others because He loves us.
In the American culture, we tend to view love as an ooey gooey feeling a guy and a girl get before they get married. But love is so much more than that. My church's youth director put it like this: true love is sacrificing one's desires for someone else's.
Love involves sacrifice, serving, and dedication. God showed the ultimate display of love when He died for us on that cross two thousand years ago. That was sacrifice. Soon before His death, Jesus was literally washing the dirty feet of His disciples, one of whom betrayed Him to the Jewish authorities. That's service. And when He was on the cross, the people in the crowd of onlookers teased Him, crying that if He was the Messiah, He could save Himself. And it's true. Because Jesus is God, He could have easily stopped His death. But He didn't. He followed through with His mission, rising again three days later. And even now, He doesn't abandon us. He follows through with His promises to us, even when we don't deserve it. That's dedication.
If you've never experienced God's love, today is the perfect day to read a Bible (whether in print or online) and discover what God has done for you. Here are some verses I recommend:
- Romans 5:8
- John 3:16
- 1 Corinthians 13
- 1 John 4
- Proverbs 10:12
- John 15:13
- Romans 8:39
- Revelation 3:19
- John 19
- John 20
- Luke 23
- Luke 24
- Mark 15
- Mark 16
- Matthew 27
- Matthew 28
There are so many others! If you have accepted Jesus' gift of salvation, I would love to know some of your favorite verses about the love God has shown you! Happy Valentine's Day!
With His Love,
Alyssa

ReplyDeleteThank you, Alyssa! I love the definition of love that you wrote from your youth director!
Here a few of my favorite verses about love:
1 John 4:10
John 15:13
1 John 3:16
1 Corinthians 13:5b~ “[Love] does not seek its own…
Happy Valentine’s Day!💖
Oh, also, Romans 5:8!!!
ReplyDeleteI love those so much! The 1 Corinthians verse is absolutely wonderful, and goes right with the definition from my youth director. True love is not about making yourself look good, or making yourself happy, but about seeking the well-being of someone else!
DeleteI also love that chapter of Scripture because 1 John 4 tells us that God is love, and since that chapter (1 Cor. 13) is the definition of love, we can learn more of God's attributes!
Happy Valentine's Day! Great perspective, Alyssa. Thank you!
